| There are 554 (252 Co.operatives) sugar factories in operation with production capacity of 190 lakh M.T. of sugar as on 31 st March 2007. These mills are located in 18 states of the country About 60 % of them are in co-operative sector. The sugar industry is 100 % operating by co-operative sector in Gujarat state. |

| In the State of Gujarat 17 Sugar factories are working with the installed capacity of sugarcane crushing capacity of 65000 tone per day. It is also a matter of pride that all sugar factories are in co-operative sector. |

| In the Gujarat out of 125 lakhs hector lands under cultivation, 1.90 lakhs hector lands here under sugarcane cultivation |
| |
| More than 4.50 lakhs farmers are covered as members of the sugar co operatives. The total turn over for the year 2007-2008 of the co-operative sugar industries is more than Rs. 2000 crores. This sector is also providing direct & indirect employment more than 3.15 lakhs people during the sugarcane crushing season. |
