6000 boats will be fitted with LPG kits and insulated boxes worth 3000 rupees each will be distributed among poor fishermen operating on the small scale in a forthcoming Agricultural Festival
Announcement in the Legislative Assembly by Mr. Bhupendrasinh Chudasama
Gandhinagar, Wednesday
To provide relief to fishermen linked to fisheries in this year’s Agricultural Festival 2007, around 6000 F.R.P. boats operating on kerosene or petrol will be fitted with LPG kits costing around 6000 rupees per kit free of charge. This move is expected to benefit 6000 fishermen operating on a small scale.

Minister of Fisheries Mr. Bhupendrasinh Chudasama while responding to the expected demands further stated that this scheme which is going to come into force for the very first time will result in daily savings of 58% in the operational costs of small fishermen. It will also result in reduced pollution. The living standard of small fishermen will also go up as a result of financial aid.

Apart from the above announcement, making another important declaration he said that to provide relief to the fishermen and fisherwomen operating on a very small scale insulated boxes will be distributed free of cost amongst them. The State Government has taken into consideration fishermen operating at all levels. Small scale fishermen who are chiefly below the poverty line, catch fish after a lot of hard efforts, but in the absence of facilities to preserve their catch, often the fish that they have caught become inedible and have to be thrown back into the sea as they cannot be sold. In order to prevent this, the State Government has taken a step forward in the current year by providing insulated boxes worth 3000 rupees to the fishermen and the ladies responsible for selling the catch, free of cost during the Agricultural Festival. This will enable the fish to stay edible for a longer period and hence the people involved will be able to sell them and rise above the poverty line.

Giving information about the development of fish ports and maintenance of water bodies, Mr. Chudasama told the House that a well-planned program has been undertaken to reduce the traffic at the ports situated on the Saurashtra-Kutch coast by increasing the facilities available at these ports and also developing other fish ports. The fish ports at Porbander, Mangrol and Veraval will be developed. A new port will be developed at Jafrabad. Bhadeli-Jaglala, Sutrapada and Umargam are currently in the process of development.
